Role Models: Kim Humberstone

Maj Kim HumberstoneI am a Pers Admin officer in the Staff & Personnel Support specialist pool, Central Reserve Headquarters Adjutant General’s Corps (CRHQ AGC).

I rejoined the Army Reserves in 2003 having taken the preceding years to complete my transition from male to female. I found the Army to be a very different place to the one I left the previous decade, and was quickly able to progress through the ranks, taking a Late Entry Commission in 2010. In 2012 I took a year out of the civil service to go on Operations in Afghanistan. The quality of leadership education in the Army is second to none and having returned from Operations I got a lot out of the Intermediate Command and Staff Course at the Defence Academy. I have subsequently had attachments to HQ 3 (UK) Div and Army HQ.

In my civilian life I am a qualified accountant and a Senior Civil Servant in the Government Finance Function (GFF). As part of that role I co-lead the GFF Diversity & Inclusion working group. I am also the Reserves Champion for the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, working with colleagues in the Ministry of Defence to support reservists in the civil service to enjoy their dual careers and signposting those expressing an interest in joining the Reserves.

In terms of diversity, inclusion and respect, I continue to observe tangible progress in the Army and I enjoy contributing to this through my attendance at London Pride each year. I am now hoping to work with the Army Cadet Force on a similar level of change there.
